Signed. I work for an ISP, and have spent the last two months monkeying with my internet connection to try to beat the compensation. It performs worst with my business class 50Mbps down / 10Mbps up connection, about the same with 25/5, very slightly better sometimes with 12/2. I had my network operations people write me a config file for 128k down / 64k up, and had no more compensation, good hit detection, cover from corners, etc, the way it is supposed to be, but at 64k, I don't have enough bandwidth to both play the game and use a mic, and it would take 20 seconds to load into the game initially. Sad that the only way I can beat lag compensation is to use a connection that is slower the the internet my phone had 8 years ago. Not sure why they bother with bars either, as I had 3 bars in a <75ms lobby with a 2x dialup speed connection, while sometimes having 2 bars in a <75ms lobby on 50/10.
I should note that the raw speed of a connection isn't nearly as important as latency and jitter, e.g., a low latency, low jitter 12/2 connection on this game is going to perform worse than a high latency, high jitter 25/5, but within my network we have low latency and jitter at whatever speeds, they can only be slightly altered by raw network potential. What works for me won't necessarily work for someone with a different ISP, or even in a different part of my network. Either way, I am going to try a 3/1 config today, and cross my fingers and hope that it is the magic number.
Are there really so many people with such bad internet that it has to be this way? I understand that making one person in a twelve man lobby mad just makes better business sense than the reverse, but it sucks that anyone should ever have to break their internet just to play your game.
