Tactics for the noob

Ok, i guess I'll just start right in.  The first time you pick multi player its going to take some getting used to the control set up.  It would be wise of a new player to go through the campaign and maybe solo play to learn some of the weapons and maps.  Once you jump into multi play, you should try to follow a team member unless you are playing free for all (then it would be a poor choice to follow another player).

Now some veterans won't want you following if they are ghosting (using stealth perks).  So understand if they take off on you.  But is usually a good decision to move with a team member, just not to close so you both don't get taken out.  This method is very basic.  Veterans will use more flanking and map terrain decisions.  these will come with time.

It is easy to fall into trying to be the "sniper".  It is a very important skill and can be addicting, but your team is more than just bait.  If you work with your group, all can benefit.  Right at the beginning of a match, take a quick look at your team members.  Are they all carrying sniper rifles?  This could be the recipe for a long painful match.  Just remember, you can switch your class at anytime, and it will change at respawn.  Changing classes is what a veteran does to counter various situations on the simulated battlefield.

Lastly for today, if you get killed going down a path once, twice, why go the same way three times?  There are always options.  Good Hunting!

    Re: Tactics for the noob

Hey - a post that's meant to help out new players! I'm certainly glad to see that people still care about other people succeeding and having a good time playing MW3.

As such, I'll toss in a couple of tips, too!

Pointstreaks TIP: Consider using Specialist pointstreaks to level up. Using the Specialist streaks allows you to gain considerable XP for each perk you acquire via kills, allowing you and your weapons to level up faster. Assault helicopter killstreaks are broken (they only kill people who stand still or do not have Blind Eye perk active), so if you choose Assault as your pointstreak system, try to avoid helos. Support pointstreak rewards are great at all levels, but try to either avoid the booby trapped care package OR use it only when someone else calls in a real care package. Toss them near each other and you will usually get a kill from the trap package.

Perks TIP: Strive for Pro perks whenever you can. Use the Barracks to view your Perks' challenges so that you can play matches while focusing on particular situations that work towards achieving the challenges. For example, creating a class with Blind Eye and SitRep will work for you in two ways: destroying killstreaks and destroying equipment will both earn you "kills" towards your pro perks. And since SitRep makes all enemy equipment and killstreaks glow red, you can use that to find all kinds of enemy stuff easily.

Class TIP: Now, for a class tip. I tend to use Overkill a lot because I like the ability to have a long range and short range weapon at the ready (and ones that I like to use, not just ones from downed enemies). Some people think Overkill is a wasted perk, but it isn't if you use it in the right situations.

As I leveled up, I created a class that I really like that seems to work well in almost all situations. I tend to rotate my SMG and AR choices depending on which weapons I am leveling up at the time, but here's what seems to work the best for me.

    Overkiller

    Primary Weapon: PP90M1

    PW Proficiency: Focus

    PW Attachment: Extended Mags

    Second Primary: SCAR-L

    SP Proficiency: Focus

    SP Attachment: Red Dot Sight

    Lethal: Bouncing Betty

    Tactical: Portable Radar

Perk 1: Sleight of Hand Pro

    Perk 2: Overkill Pro

    Perk 3: Stalker Pro

    Point Streak: Specialist

PS Reward 1: Assassin Pro @ 2 kills

PS Reward 2: Scavenger Pro @ 4 kills

PS Reward 3: Blast Shield Pro @ 6 kills

PS Reward 4: Bonus (+100 XP @ 8 kills + every other kill)

I hope those tips are useful! Good luck, new guys and gals!

    Re: Tactics for the noob

This is an interesting thread and the advice given above is v. useful. My advice for a noob at either FFA or TDM would be, whilst you learn the maps, try to stay at the outer edge of maps, looking inwards. If you are on the edge of a map, your back is generally covered and you can focus on covering your front and sides. Also, create a private match with you as the only player and explore the maps. This is time well spent.
