Camoflauge Revamp

Posted by Grayewsable on Jul 18, 2012 12:42 PM

Call of Duty 4 had headshots.

Modern Warfare 2 had headshots.

Black Ops had CODPoints.

Modern Warfare 3 had weapon experience.

So what will Black Ops 2 have for camoflauges and, more specifically, how will players be able to paint their guns gold? Will players be able to access new camoflauges over time using the same weapon again and again, will the player have to master the weapon's gun class or will the player have to gain 14 prestiges?

A gold gun should be something I see in a killcam or pick up on the go that makes me go "Damn, that guy earned that shiny exterior" - it should be something rare, that signifies not how long someone has played (if I wanted to know that, they have a playercard), but how skillful they are with that gun and how partial they are to that gun.

What I'd love to see:

  • Keeping camoflauges entirely seperate from the CODPoints system if Treyarch decide to keep them.
  • For typical colourful, vibrant camoflauges like Fall and Red Tiger - keep headshot challenges.
  • In regards to more practical camoflauges such as Arctic, Woodland and Dust - produce stealth challenges.
  • Gold! - Challenges. Challenges that show skill, finesse and dedication with that weapon. (see below)

For gold, I'm going to support and adjust what 'ghamorra' has suggested:

A combination of Gold gun challenges/requisites for a single weapon-

  • Amassing 10 or more headshots in ten minutes with the weapon.
  • Gain 15 kills with the weapon and it's attatchments in one life.
  • Obtain 3 kills with the weapon within 5 seconds.
  • Kill 4 different enemies on the opposing team with one magazine.
  • Score 4000 or more points in a single game, exluding Search and Destroy and Headquarters, using solely the weapon and it's attatchments.
  • Complete an entire, full-length match with 30 or more kills and atleast a 10 kill:death ratio using solely the weapon and it's attachments.

  • Get a collateral by killing two or more enemies with one bullet/shell - Sniper rifles and shotguns only.
  • Fire every single bullet/shell in a magazine into an enemy - Sniper rifles, shotguns and semi-automatics only.

One final note to Treyarch:

Allow camoflauges and challenges to be kept through prestige levels. It was one of the contributing reasons why people stick with one or two setups throughout their career.

Any suggestions and feedback, especially on the gold gun challenges, would be greatly appreciated.

Again, much credit to 'ghamorra' for the gold-gun challenges idea!

Thanks for reading

Gain a 10 killstreak with the weapon without being hurt. = Everyone camps in a corner to get gold camo.

Win 3 Free-for-all's in a row using only this weapon for kills. = So you can't use equipment, secondary, knife or killstreaks?

Having this weapon amass for more than 20% of your total multiplayer kills. = Use other guns and loose the camo or use one gun so much that it makes extremely hard to get gold to other guns.

Amassing 15 or more headshots in ten minutes with the weapon. = Time resets after every match? Extremely hard for some weapons probably.

I think it's important to have an accuracy challenge, especially for SMGs since people like to pre fire around corners and use the hell out of steady aim:

Play an entire match with 50% accuracy (min 500 rounds)
Empty your entire clip without missing
Kill an enemy by chain reaction (eg. claymore - barrel - enemy)
Kill 3 enemies within 5 sec (gun only)
Earn 10 headshots in one match
    Earn 10 longshots in a row (non-sniper)
Shoot a C4 while it's being tossed (probably impossible)
    20 penetration kills
100 double kills from behind using the silencer
Kill the entire enemy team in one clip
Finish an enemy off by switching to a secondary 100 times
50 kills while stunned or concussed
    1000 One Shot Kills

10 killstreak with out taking damage and having no attachments

Mastering a weapon means being able to use a weapon for purposes beyond what it's designed to do. Anyone can achieve gold camo simply by using the piss out a of a weapon. CoD needs to bring back the meaning of earn and stop giving free hand outs on achievements

I've always prestiged as soon as I was able to so I wasn't able to get very many camos in MW or MW2. I'd  personally be fine with either the Black Ops system or the MW3 one.

I'm not sure about doing challenges to get gold guns. Camping would increase if there was a killstreak challenge as Matuzz pointed out, and an accuracy challenge could be problematic for our 2-bar warriors that play the game.

True, I would like for challenges to remain static over each prestige. Especially for weapons that are earned on later levels like the AK typically is. This would also mean that certain challenges only need to be met once so that camping doesn't become a constant problem

If you think about it, amassing headshots with a weapon has to do mainly with how much time you've spent with the gun. Not so much with sniper rifles, because you have better accuracy, but with LMGs, SMGs, and shotguns.

It would be nice though to have something that shows a players skill. I want to pick up a gun and see that it's Gold and think "Oh sh*t, I hope this guy is on my team"

Gun camo's should be earnt via headshots ala CoD4 - earn X number of headshots for a weapon gets you silver camo - earn silver camo for all the weapons in a particular class & you earn gold camo for all the weapons in that class.

Why even have a gold camo? Ever seen one in real life?

The golden camo is just a terrible idea and has to be kicked out of the game, only room for useable camo that can be changed while in game while spawning not playing, so maybe a durt/wood combo and a leaf/wood camo and so for a forrest map.

There are some good ideas here but nothing (except a game mode type emblem-achievement) should unlockable by a challenge which can only be achieved within a specific game mode.

No-one should be forced to slog their way through a game mode they do not enjoy never mind one they are no good at (which would force them to play - and lose - even more), to unlock something like gold cammo. Some people would take forever to win 3 FFAs.

The weapon challenges otherwise sound great. I'd use advanced challenge combos for the fall and red tiger types too.

I can't stand FFA, never liked it. It's a kills with total disregard for deaths mode and has no team and therefore no team play. The whole mode is against my ethics. I have played it of course but I am not interested in it more than a private match mess around.

My mates feel the same. I Think that it was a well-notes criticism of BO that around 3 Pro Perks required players to spend much time on specific game modes and - irrespective of my own tastes or others - not having EXCLUSIVE game mode specific challenges allows everyone to enjoy the challenges and therefore the game.

        I appreciate your post.

I don't agree with this at all.  I understand you want to have something that will show off your skill, but some people who are good, may not be able to complete certain tasks you suggested. I think earning Gold camo at Prestige 14-15 is the best method, because unless you're one pathetic loser who has time to play 24-7 (literally), it will take a while to earn that Gold camo.  I'm just about to prestige to level 7, and I play a lot.  Yet, it's still a slow process.  When I do unlock that Gold camo, I know I earned it, and that's how it is for everyone else.  You're not gonna find someone who manages to go from level 1 (or even level 50) all the way to prestige 14 within a week or two, it will take much, much longer than that.

What about those who can't pysically play the game all the time. I consider myself a frequent player yet I'm nowhere near the highest prestige because I don't have enough time in my day to play CoD. I do however think I'm skilled with some of my favorite guns.

The Mk14 is my baby and I have 24% accuracy with it and 2.8 K/D. I've played against people before that have the gold camo, but when I look up their stats via ELITE they suck with it. Only have 15% accuracy and sub 1 K/D.

Getting the gold camo should be solely based on skill and have nothing to due with playtime. I can see maybe having stages of camos like bronze and silver. That way less dedicated players can still show off their skill. You also have to remember, earning camos has to do with getting kills too. That can take time

Tip of the hat to you, Ghammy! I'm traditionally a FAL man but it was Carbine on WAW and M14/MK14 on MW/MW3. I also have a 24-25% accuracy and a K/D near to 2.5. I'm assuming you play to mid-long range as a preference even if you also do well closer than that.

I don't like gold cam personally, I think challenges should also be in place - that are really a challenge for the fall and tiger and slightly exotic but more realistic cammos too.

I think a combination of time and skill should unlock these things. So not straight out top Prestige, and not straight out difficult challenge that only a few can achieve in a short time while others ruin their gameplay trying.

They should be a variety of mini-challenges involvibg skill and time, such as headshots total, accuracy across one game, kills in one game, attachment use (kills with all), killstreaks unlocked, empty one clip on target, bring down a chopper, kill-use secondary-kill, kill-use equipment-kill, etc.

          This how it should work:

Bronze camo - complete 4/10 challenges

Silver camo - complete 7/10 challenges

Gold camo - complete 10/10 challenges

Platinum camo - complete all challenges for that gun type (i.e. complete 80/80 AR challenges)

Just make it so that you have to reach a 5 pt + kdr in one game a certain amount of times to earn it.  Then it will def show skill.

I'm guessing you mean +5 kills minus deaths (or do you mean 5+ K/D?). In any case, it might be ok-ish for TDM but is a little anti-objective on a lot of other modes and no game modes or unlocking challenges should be at odds (contradicting), as it damages enjoyment and satisfaction as well as teamplay.

Agreed but it could be broken by gun class ie:

SMGs - get 5 + kills per deaths ratio 5 times (I only did that once on MW3)

AR -  win a search and destroy as the last member of your team 10 times

Sniper Rifle - kill 10 enemies near your objective in one match 10 times

LMG - why do I have to think of everything?

Note:  Im not suggesting you have to use these weapons for the challenge, just that when you get the challenge that is the gun type that gains the paint

Note:  Numbers here were arbitrary and might need adjustment

Note:  Gold is tacky and should be replaced with platinum colored paint.

If you can't play very frequently, than odds are you aren't going to get a gold weapon. I don't think Treyarch will let us unlock our coveted camoflauge with a few skillful manuveurs and challenges completed. Every game has made us invest time to reach gold and I think there is a reason for that.

They want us to keep playing. We keep playing to get our gold guns, they release map packs which we buy, we continue to play, and once we finally reach golden guns it is already November of next year.

There should be a variety of cammos then, unlockable by a variery of parameters.

Some cammos with some simple challenges that happen with minimal time and skill.

Some cammos that require skill only.

Some that require passage of time.

          Some that require both.

This way everyone can show their worth.

          Easy: jungle, winter, forest, desert

Skill only: urban, olive, cloud, tiger

Passage of time: mud, swamp, ice, mountain

Time & skill: red tiger, blue tiger, silver, gold

          ...for example...

Not a bad idea at all!! I would love not losing camos and having to complete specific challenges to get them.

If they have the same money system, I think it should let you have gold guns at any prestige.  I would also increase the price of the camo substancially to around 150 000
