Time For R&R: The 5 Best Arcade Games in HQ

Take a load off. You deserve it.

There’s more to HQ than Orders, Contracts, Supply Drops and the occasional appearance of Captain Butcher. Sometimes a soldier needs a break. Sometimes a soldier needs to kick back and enjoy the R&R area.

If you haven’t ventured down to the R&R tent, it’s just down the hill from the Theater, past the Emblem Gallery. You’ll see a chess board, a phonograph and two soldiers engaged in conversation and playing cards. This is the sort of old-school rest and relaxation you’d expect during World War II. But, your R&R experience is a different sort of old-school: classic Activision titles. For 10 Armory Credits, you can pick from 15 Activision arcade games from days of yore. Here’s five of our favorite oldies-but-goodies.

Boxing
Square off as a goofy set of arms in a two-minute, bird’s-eye boxing match. You score points for landing punches between your opponent’s equally strange-looking arms. Movement is key in this game. Pushing the other fighter to the ropes is where you can really do some damage. It’s a more of a marathon than a sprint, so, keep an eye out for late-in-the-round flurries of blows from enemy arms.

Pitfall 2
Inhabit Pitfall Harry as you explore the dangerous environment of the jungle. Descend into the deep caverns beneath while avoiding various crocodiles, scorpions, cobras and the odd pit of quicksand. You can’t technically lose this game – you’ll just go back to your last continue point. You can travel left and right, as well as up and down. The game is untimed, so you literally have all the time in the world to explore the surprising depth of this 2-D world.

Chopper Command
Take control of a military helicopter and destroy all enemy fighter jets and helicopters in an effort to protect the friendly trucks beneath you. While the enemy moves quickly once you can see them, you do have a distinct advantage. On your screen, beneath the friendly trucks, is a sort of long range scanner that shows all enemies near and far. Knock out wave after wave of enemies until you reach 999,999. Or until you die. Whichever comes first.

Demon Attack
The demons are attacking and all you’ve got is a laser cannon. These aren’t regular demons, either. They’re prickly buggers that vary in how they move and shoot at you. Sometimes, the demons fire a series of bursts, sometimes it’s longer, single streams. Either way, you have to avoid them while landing shots from directly underneath the attackers. Once the waves get up into double-digits, the demons’ random, difficult attack patterns feel extra demonic.

Grand Prix
Take control of a military helicopter and destroy all enemy fighter jets and helicopters in an effort to protect the friendly trucks beneath you. While the enemy moves quickly once you can see them, you do have a distinct advantage. On your screen, beneath the friendly trucks, is a sort of long range scanner that shows all enemies near and far. Knock out wave after wave of enemies until you reach 999,999. Or until you die. Whichever comes first.

These are just five of the 15 games, so, be sure to check out the arcade for yourself and take all of these old-school classics for a spin. Practice some self-care and treat yourself to a little R&R.
