Get out there: Don’t let the thought that everyone’s a threat back you into a corner. The eliminations will rack up fast, so get out there and fight aggressively. You can still be tactical, but don’t camp.

Clean up the scraps: There’s a time for honor, and Free-for-All isn’t it. If you stumble on two or more enemies engaged in a fight, take advantage of the situation and eliminate them while they’re distracted.

Off the radar: With the return of the classic minimap in Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® III Multiplayer, Operators become momentarily visible on the minimap and Tac Map when firing their weapon. By adding a Suppressor attachment to your weapon, however, you will remain off the radar even when shooting.

Key Terms and Definitions

FFA: Free-for-All.

Kill/Death Ratio or K/D Ratio: The number of kills earned divided by the number of deaths. Keeping this above 1.0 — one kill per one death — is a good goal in Free-for-All matches.

Topline Tactics: A winning Free-for-All player:

  • Eliminates enemies.
  • Plays aggressively.

Recruit Tactics

Get that UAV up: The UAV Killstreak is priceless on Free-for-All. While you benefit from a teammate’s UAV in other modes, here it’s all up to you. That extra intel goes a long way and can help you reach the next Killstreak in the rotation. Your eyes and ears are still paramount for map awareness, though, as some players may have stealth-focused Loadouts that allow them to prevent detection.

The Golden Rule: Remember, swapping to your Handgun is always faster than reloading your Primary Weapon. When you run out of ammo midfight, every millisecond counts, so make the switch, eliminate the enemy, and then reload.

Warm up at the Firing Range: Your weapon is your main means of dealing damage and scoring points in Free-for-All, so take the extra time to get your Gunsmith configuration just right. Head to the Firing Range before queuing up to test your weapons against dummies at various distances. Tune and tweak your attachment selection until you’ve found the settings that best complement your playstyle preference for the matches ahead. Boost your versatility by creating multiple Loadouts fulfilling specialized roles.

Advanced Tactics

Force the spawn: Sometimes you’ll find a great vantage point overlooking continuous action. Use this to your advantage by equipping the Tactical Insertion Field Upgrade to mark your next spawn point on the map. Because everyone is on constant alert for enemies, it’s less likely that your equipment will be found and disabled if you hide it well enough.

Watch the Kill Cam: The Kill Cam provides invaluable information, especially when you’re getting eliminated by an enemy player you can’t find. Use the information provided to discover their position and the angle they attacked from. Even if they’ve moved on, you’ll at least know the general area to find them.

Play your life: Even though players have unlimited respawns in Free-for-All, it’s still worth playing as if you’ve only got one. Operators move fast in this game, so don’t hesitate to retreat and reposition when you stumble into a bad situation. By balancing aggression with caution, you’re more likely to stay alive long enough to access your Killstreaks.

Come and get me: Draw enemies to you by firing first and then falling back to more favorable sightlines. The trick doesn’t work on everyone, but it can be a good way to get overeager players to leave their vantage point and enter ground better suited to you, whether that’s pulling a sniper into a tight building or drawing a close-ranged Loadout out into the open.
